Like many other systems in china, it uses CRRC rolling stock and the same tunnel and station designs as the major of the 40+ metro systems in china. It’s also very baffling how large the metro is now. I was born in 2008 and there was no metro there. Now I’m 16 and there are 300+ stations. Good job china

Standardization is the key to mass production, as my technical school teachers used to say: the construction sector is a form of industry, with the key difference that the factory moves from one place to another instead of the product when it is delivered.
I visited Kunming in 2019 and there were 3 lines. I return in 2024, and there is 6. What China has done is remarkable
You mean that stations in different Chinese cities look the same?!
@blava3155 Metro Stations in different cities in China are very similar, just some designs are different, but same models
@AprezaRenaldy Type A Train 22.0m long, 3.0~3.08m wide Type B Train 19.0m long, 2.8~2.88m wide Type C Train 19.0m long, 2.6m wide Type L Train 16.5m long, 2.6m wide
@AustinKelly94 The key to this is a very different funding model to unlock budget and let local governing body has the freedom to do long term planning. It also brought incentives for local govt to build trains faster and further. It definitely has benefits in long run but I'm almost 99.99999% sure this is a very specific way of doing things that is never gonna be widely accepted elsewhere.
@defrense As the Chinese themselves have said repeatedly - do NOT copy our strategy or economic model wholesale in your country or it's doomed to fail. Doesn't mean there isn't a lot of lessons to be learned from them though. On the flip side, the spending spree in infrastructure across the major Chinese cities over the past 15 years was heavily fueled by the renevue to local governments via real estate bidding for development of state owned land. Now that the party's over it remains to be seen whether they can or should keep the pace moving forward.
I was born in the 80s and when I left in 94 we didn’t even have traffic signals.
@blava3155 train design is the same. Same trainsets, same signalling systems, same general specifications. Design of stations is usually different but still very similar to each other, I find most places will use the same font and line numbering system, same announcement voices too.
Building on average one whole metro line a year is crazy.
Many of these lines have been in the process of being built for many years. What is impressive is that China plans the whole transportation infrastructure for a city and builds multiple lines at once. In most the world, that doesn't happen anymore (sadly). We build one or two lines, THEN decide what the following lines should be.
@lindsiria and only cost same as Building a tram line in Berlin
I regret sometimes why any European city makes such a quick metro system as in China... ... but on the other side last month announced that Cracow will have his own system (not only premetro like it was at beginning)
@torukmaktopoland First of all, there are only like 5 cities in Europe that can compare in size to those Chinese cities. (London, Paris, Moscow, Istanbul...) And all those cities already have wide networks and are building even more normall and express (like RER or Elizabeth line) metro lines. And IMO Kraków doesn't need (will not have money for) full sized metro system. Belgium style premetro would be right sized system with the benefit of the future proofing.

It took 5 -8 years to build one line end to end in Chengdu too. The city has 3-5 lines being built concurrently so you can see almost every year that a new line is completed

good planning is all you need. you can build few lines simultaneously, and opening them in a sequence that seems like one is being built every few months. thats what we did
10 years ago when I went to Chengdu, I was troubled by traffic jams, so I’m really happy that so many subways have been built. I want to go again.
China's rapid build and radial city planning makes for some pretty interesting results. Also, I like that they went for multiple concentric rings like Tokyo.
Chengdu is a polycentric city, but Beijing is a completely centralized city with the Imperial Palace. The farther away from the Forbidden City, the cheaper the real estate, and there are no bustling towns.
Chengdu itself has a very circular plan appearance. Unlike most of Chinese cities which go for square form
Considering Chengdu has a population of over 20 million residents,it is definate that an efficient and massive railroad transport system is so necessary.As I myself a citizen in Chengdu,I really appreciate the constructions done and being done which really benefit us. Also,thanks for this nice video!
I've been to Chengdu twice! It's an amazing city and was my first experience on a subway system outside of the U.S.
It's amazing how significantly faster they developed their metro system when compared to places like NYC
No bureaucratic setbacks does wonders when it comes to infrastructure. China is all about planning, combine that with one-party system that easily imposes public interest over private interest, massive economy that attracts people into huge cities, an army of seasoned engineering veterans and limitless funds and you get the Chinese transportation miracle. Everything they did in the past 25 years is nothing short of spectacular, but Chengdu is the crown jewel of this endevour - to build such a massive system in less than 20 years is truly astonshing! Kudos for China!
Another thing is incentives. The Chinese government owns all land, so they make massive amounts of money when a subway turns cheap farmland into a place to put luxury apartments.
I'm from Chengdu and I'm really excited to see how rapidly the metro system is developing in my hometown. There's gonna be more than 2000 km of operation kilometers in total as planned in the future.
it's crazy that US can spend billions on highway project but can't spend on metro system. The only city that has acceptable metro system in the US is NYC. Others need heavy investment if they want the system to be efficient.
As a local in Chengdu, I am really surprised by the rapid development of metro system in these 10 years. btw the latest line s3 Ziyang line is coming soon

In China, if a local government wants to build a subway, it needs the approval of the central government first. This process is not easy, sometimes it takes years. Therefore, once approved, the local government will advance rapidly and the citizens will look forward to it.
It's amazing to see how quickly and comprehensively the Chinese can build. It'll be interesting to see how the systems are maintained over the coming decades
I think it'll go pretty well. I rode the Guangzhou metro's Line 1, and even though they use 20-year old trains the ride is much smoother than anything I've seen in North America, where I live.

What amazes me is that big Chinese cities that have metro systems are having to expand their network with the population growing ever more faster. China is well ahead of pretty much every country.
Friendly reminder that line 13 is missing, opening next year in 2025, it’s been under construction for yrs, and I’m excited

Awesome video! This is what happens when you play NIMBY Rails with unlimited money
NIMBY is never a real issue here, as no privately owned land the city has much better freedom in infrastructure planning. The unlimited money comes from a different funding model. There is no such thing as local tax or council rates in China, local governing body sells leases of land for development to raise majority of its operation funds, there is big incentives to build train connecting business core and city fringe so low value land lease becomes much more expensive, due to easily foreseeable return it is also easy to borrow for these projects.

Here’s an idea: make a video on a metro that isn’t open but has planned lines or even is under construction e.g. Riyadh or Bogotá (my apologies if the Saudi capital opened its metro by the time you read this comment.)
Chengdu is nothing short of astonishing. Honestly, considering its population size I was quite surprised it didn’t have a single line until 2010. I would have expected there to be at least one. Some of these projects may be delayed, but at this rate the system’s going to double within the next ten years
I love watching all videos of yours, they are absolutely amazing, I have a question for you, is it possible to make a evolution of Istanbul Metro? they are improving quite a bit since 2018, and they have lot of metro construction work that is not going to conclude anytime soon...
In the United States, we spent three times as much money over the same period just debating whether to build the line, worrying about whether a groundhog nest along the route would be affected, and discussing how to ensure LGBTQ fairness during construction. In the end, the budget was gone — and nothing had even started.
You have no idea how the extension of line 17 in 5:22 satisfied my OCD. That unsymmetrical gap has bothered me the entire video. Any idea why it took them so long to connect that sector of the city.

The construction speed of Chengdu subway is really crazy. In just a few years, the mileage is among the top in the country. In front of him are the established cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. People who are not from the next city will feel shocked every time they go to Chengdu.

What kind of TBMs are they using to open a kilometers-long line per year? This should be physically impossible with current technology
China has the world's largest shield machine, the world's most advanced construction level, and the world's lowest construction cost, so it is natural that Chengdu will continue to open at least one new subway every year in the next 10 years as it does now.
