During the research and development process, data is very important. Compared to being in a closed laboratory, going out and participating in various scenarios can gain better data. For a humanoid robot of conventional size, a 21-kilometer running requires approximately 250,000 precise joint movements, serving as an "extreme test" for joint accuracy, thermal management, power systems, control algorithms, communication interference, and other issues. Such activities not only have experimental value but also provide entertainment, and they should do it more often in the future.

Some people say that this is China "adding drama" to the industry, but that's wrong. If it were truly a "show", what we would see should be perfect in all aspects. However, what we see is unedited live broadcasts of the competition, with various issues arising with the participating robots.

Whether it's the human players, the live audience, or public opinion, they have all encouraged the technology companies and robot players. Who doesn't stumble on the road to growth? The development of an industry is no different.

Every time the robot falls, the system will receive thousands of sets of abnormal data. These data not only record the current state, but also include information on how to allocate joint torque and adjust step frequency on different road surfaces, helping the R&D team improve the stability and adaptability of the product in complex environments. The humanoid robot industry is also accelerating the process of landing applications through such "extreme tests" time and time again.

When the world's first car was introduced, it wasn't much faster than a horse-drawn carriage, yet look at our daily lives now. Robots are the same, perhaps when humanoid robots become widely integrated into society in the future, we will remember this race. It’s "one small step for robots, one giant leap for the industry."

A little bit worried.
Not about a Schwarzenegger-style Terminator emerging to destroy human civilization.

(An interesting fact: China's massive surveillance system is also called "Skynet," but it has no connection to the Skynet in Terminator. It's just a reference to a traditional Chinese idiom describing a criminal who, even if not punished by humans, will face divine retribution: 天網(wǎng)恢恢疏而不漏 The net of heaven is vast and wide, with no gaps to slip through.)

What I'm worried about is the replacement of workers.

China is rapidly expanding unmanned factories, driverless cars, and the like.

The momentum is so fierce that in just over a decade, China has gone from zero to the leader in this industry, with a commanding, cliff-like lead.

Based on my understanding of Chinese national character, this stems from the fear of a century of national humiliation. We fear falling behind any country in advanced technology. It’s roughly like: if the U.S. has it, we must have it too. If Russia has it, we must have it too! No matter what it is!

In the 1980s, China even conducted research on human paranormal abilities, taking it very seriously. Because it was said that the U.S. and the Soviet unx were studying it, well then, we had to study it too, even if it seemed absurd like human paranormal abilities.

Interestingly, when I was a kid, I thought the leader in the robotics industry would surely be Germany, with Japan in second place. Maybe because one of my elders was obsessively studying West German and Japanese technology and couldn’t stop praising those two countries.

I even remember a Japanese anime about robots used in warfare, where German robots slightly outperformed Japanese ones. It seems even the Japanese back then held Germany in high regard.

China’s progress in robotics is great—but what about the workers?

Both in China and abroad.

There’s a saying that China’s rise has effectively blocked the path to industrialization for other developing countries.

There’s some truth to that.Almost every country starting industrialization from scratch begins with textiles.

Take Bangladesh, for example—it’s trying now, but I doubt they can accumulate the startup capital and technology needed for industrialization.

First, raw materials, processing machinery, and even electricity are all imported from China.

首先,原材料、加工機械,甚至是電力都全部依賴從中國進口;

Second, China’s unmanned textile factories have a crushing advantage over them.

Chinese netizens are heatedly debating this too.In China, the situation is manageable—worst case, the government hands out money to support workers. But what about other developing countries?

What can be done?No one knows!

The political textbooks I studied as a kid said our goal was to build a com...st society worldwide—a beautiful new world without exploitation, oppression, where everyone contributes according to their ability and receives according to their needs.

And now?The outlook isn’t great.

With robotics advancing so rapidly, it might leave even more workers in third-world countries jobless!

Personally, I’m quite concerned, but I don’t know what the future holds.

What will the future be like?Heaven knows!

I see an episode of Star Trek Voyager turned real life.

There’s an episode called Virtuoso where the Voyager Crew give a musical recital to the Qomar. They’re not impressed. They are however impressed with the Holographic doctor who can sing and becomes famous.

The doctor wants to stay with the Qomar as a celebrity. But the Qomar are only interested in how they can improve this technology and by the end of the episode they manage to do it and the Doctor returns to Voyager.

So? We’ll see humanoid robots do sporty things and we’ll see a split between human and robotic sports. Where boffins craft robots that are faster and more capable than humans.

Where we’re at is at the John Henry stage of technology.

John Henry is an American folk hero, where he uses his hammer to beat a steam drill but at the cost of his life.

I think we’ll likely see humans attempt to challenge the power of the machines for a while they’ll win but suffer the same fate as John Henry.

This is a fairly good summary of John Henry.

Then we’ll likely see laws where robots don’t compete directly with humans and we’ll see a split say the Olympics (normal) vs Robotic Olympics.

BEIJING (Reuters) -Twenty-one humanoid robots joined thousands of runners at the Yizhuang half-marathon in Beijing on Saturday, the first time these machines have raced alongside humans over a 21-km (13-mile) course.

The robots from Chinese manufacturers such as DroidVP and Noetix Robotics came in all shapes and sizes, some shorter than 120 cm (3.9 ft), others as tall as 1.8 m (5.9 ft). One company boasted that its robot looked almost human, with feminine features and the ability to wink and smile.

What is your reaction to seeing the robots running a half marathon?
My reaction…a glimpse of what’s to come, very, very soon…..

..…there’s no real surprises here. The advancement in technology over the past 5 years or so has been tremendous, and with the advent of AI going mainstream, (around November 2024 with OpenAI’s ChatGPT), I think it’s quite simply inevitable.

And once you start connecting and integrating AI with advanced robotics, well, its easy to see where its going to go. The writing is on the wall folks and has been for some time…if you can’t see it, get your eyes checked..!

Answer : Innovative and amazing
Explanation: Giving robots the ability to walk and run is one of the most crucial obxtives in robotics and engineering in general. It is what people in the 20th century could not even imagine. However, with everything, there are pros and also cons. If we ever get the chance to have robots who can run and even sprint, they could revolutionize warfare and, in a sense, bring more harm than good.

We've reached the point in technology where we're not that impressed by such an event. I'm ambivalent myself. But perhaps I should not be, one of our biggest fears would be an army of robots deciding that we are ineffective and should be terminated. I once watch the documentary on seven ways the world would end. All doomsayers! But one of them was terminated by the robots. Straight out of iRobot. Personally I don't think AI needs to go any further. But I know I'm speaking to the choir on this.

In Chinese media, almost every comment is negative—people call these robots “remote-controlled toys.”
On the track, the robots run up front while staff in the back steer them with remotes, and the robots are wildly overhyped.
