Why Public Schools Are Going Broke In The U.S.

U. S. public schools are facing a major budget crunch as federal pandemic relief money runs out and enrollment numbers continue to drop. Many districts added staff during the Covid era to address urgent needs, but with fewer students and no extra funding, those positions are no longer sustainable. Watch the video above to learn why school systems are being forced to cut staff and what that means for students and communities.

I work in a school district.
The problem is the overpaid admins outnumbering the number of custodians, bus drivers, nutrition services.
95% of the “administration” have never set foot in a class room. I wish this was an exaggeration.

Basically, it's poor planning & poor judgement by a majority of those in charge. So, business as usual in America. A land where common sense is thrown out & will get you terminated.
I can only imagine what it was like back when the country invested in education. Now there's less funding each year for schools and more tax cuts for the extremely rich. And more tax cuts. Then more tax cuts. And then more.
How is the pension situation looking in Pasadena and other districts? Lots of state and local governments will pay a fortune for contracted services and admins just to avoid filling pension eligible positions.
"Walk back pay raises"? You don't get to do that. Why even say that? That is why teachers are quitting. I love seeing teachers quit. I wish more would. If our education is ever to improve, we'll need a real teacher shortage ( and a few other requirements).
Americans do not care about their kids at all! If we REALLY valued our children, we'd fund education.
Public schools should be overflowing with money as high as property tax is here in texas ....its the highest line item on my bill
They need to stop wasting money on stuff they don't need and overpaid staff that doesn't pull their own weight.
Why is enrollment down? Expect multiple factors…. one is a waste of funds from “COVID”, administrative spending, outdated funding calculations , and a diminished confidence in the value of public education. Equation for disaster.
Start by getting rid of those overpaid "administrators" who do nothing, then give that money back to the teachers.
Too much administrators, not enough actual teachers.
Restructure the whole system now.
It's not a "budget cut". It was temporary money to deal with a temporary problem... which wasn't used properly. If "pandemic" staff was needed, they shouldn't have been hired as full time staff, but rather as contracted workers on a fixed term contract
I worked at a middle/high school with an enrollment of approximately 600 students. The school had a principal and three assistant principals with a combined salary of more than $500,000. Meanwhile the chemistry lab was extremely dangerous and an acident waiting to happen. When I asked for repairs they cried poor.
Fire a minimum of half the overpaid Administrators and hire more quality teachers. Hold parents accountable for their children's continued education at home and their behaviors at school so parenting duties don't fall on those teachers.
Too many Administrators, focus on Athletics, and not paying teachers STEM more! Good luck finding a HS Physics teacher or Computer Science teacher with declining college students studying Education. Grants are not permanent fixes
in the 90's there was only 4-5 admins in my school, now the same school has around 40 admins.
The problem has and will always be administration staff. They are too many of them, they have ridiculous salaries (some earn more than public universities), do not know what they are doing at all. You only need a few of them to run budget and make sure money is paid out.
Money should always go to teachers, counselors, bus drivers and janitors. They are the ones that interact with the students everyday and actually run the school. Everyone else is support staff and its just bloated, poorly mismanaged and expensive. If that isn't fix, no amount of money or student enrollment will make any difference.
Bad healthcare and a bad education system what can possibly go wrong
This is why only 40% of the kids can do mathematics because our teachers and administration don’t even know how to budget their own balance.
Most people who graduated in 1980 went to schools that now have half the number of students but 4 times the staff as before.
School admins need to be held accountable. Knowing the funds were temporary they moved forward with their spending. This in effort to pad their resumes with “accomplishments” completed between 2020-2024.

It’s injudicious that we had to just make up jobs that weren’t in demand just to make people feel important instead of making them work in fields that were in demand.

What a beautiful country. Bad education system, bad health care system, bad retirement system and now an administration in Washington that raises tax on all imports … resulting in high inflation and lay offs in manufacturing
If public schools now have more teachers yet fewer students then shouldn't the quality of education increases as smaller class sizes = more time/attention spent on each student, like in private schools?
We have friends who are public school teachers, and they send their kids to private school. I find it very interesting that they are funding their own demise.

It sucks people are losing their jobs but if you have more staff than needed. then you need to cut staff. That is the basics at its core. If you get more students and you need more staff then you hire more. This is not a situation where you do not have enough money for the staff that is needed

The local school district publishes the salaries. The top twenty or more are administrators.

At this point the whole Public School system will be shut down and a new system will have to replace it. Its been so outdated since the Industrial age.

Send the laid-off teachers to Texas! Our district is sourcing teacher candidates from Mexico even for non-Spanish related subjects!
Teacher shortage, teacher surplus, which the heck is it?! This is an alarmist video that counters the actual trend of the fact that we don’t have enough qualified teachers in this country. The problem is NOT too many teachers per funded dollar.

If there are less students, layoff is the obvious answer so I don't get the issue there. If you moved to place with bad underfunded school, that's on you. School rating should be one of the biggest consideration when buying a house if you have kids.

Not just the number of student's...funding is also based on property values...thats one of the reasons for "red lining" to due and defund basic service....its also why public schools in high value real estate areas such as Aspen colorado are world class.

We are blessed to be able to homeschool, but the school system gets our tax dollars and don't have our child in school to spend it on. I know a number of folks who don't have kids in school also pay, so where is this money without a student to spend it on going? None of it helps us buy software, textbooks, lab supplies, etc.
Another issue is the imbalance in physical facilities. Older facilities have not been maintained and are in shrinking areas but not enough decrease in enrollment to consolidate. Families who have kids are not moving to the older neighborhoods. So those areas they do move to have to build schools.

I want to do school online. I don't want to be forced to show up every day 8am to 3:30pm all day at school classes. I want to have all assignments at the beginning of class season and go on my pace as it would be finished by end of the semester or sooner. However, I do think moving to online would help with costs by tremendously amount. Don't cut all because it's good to get advice from teachers. I mean dude think at this scale how much fuel we would save, thats for sure quite a lot.

A major issue is that students today need so many more services than they used to: mental health, food, medicine, academic intervention, etc. this means rising overhead costs for schools to meet these needs for a shrinking population. I work at a school where maybe 10 kids in the entire building (about 600 kids) are at grade level for math. We NEED math intervention desperately to get these kids the knowledge and skills they need in the workforce - even trade schools! Losing the funding means that we cannot hire anyone for those positions and have to let go of non-core staff; all of which comes back and means that the kids do not get an education.

Too much staff, but a shortage of teachers. Does excess staff include teachers? If not, what do they do? In recent years, many administrative positions were added that may have been justified by increasing enrollments, but now, because enrollments are declining, they are not needed, but once an organization has become accustomed to diluting responsibilities, it is hard to change. The same situation exists in higher education where much of the teaching has been relegated to part-time adjunct faculty who are paid about half of what full time faculty are paid to teach even though they are required to have the same qualifications, and who have few or no benefits. The savings have gone to increasing administrative staff with diluted responsibilities.
