Asian celebrities are generally seen as unattractive in Asia.... This is not a China thing.
Because damn Western aesthetics when it comes to looks are too close to racial stereotypes, those "typical racial looks" based on 18th and 19th century bullshit.
Narrow eyes, protruding cheekbones, and square chins are very stereotypical images of Asians, and Western aesthetic trends emphasize and exaggerate these "typical" features. When Asians do not have these "typical" characteristics or these characteristics are not within personal aesthetic preferences, they will be labeled by Westerners as "plastic surgery", "wanting to be white", and "self-abasement". This is why Asians resent modern Western aesthetics of Asians, because this is just Westerners trying to tell Asians what they must "look like" and is an act of racism against Asians.
Based on Simu Liu's appearance alone, he would be considered average in Asia, not handsome. But he doesn’t need to feel bad. Second- and third-generation immigrants like him are usually not as good-looking in the eyes of Asians as their parents and other first-generation immigrants. This may be because they are more Westernized, whether that's because of mannerisms or makeup or whatever.
Chinese aesthetics(some examples, mainly not pretty boys):
Similarly, pretty boys are only part of the aesthetic in Japan and Korea but not the whole.
This is why Asians think it is nonsense for Westerners to claim that "Asian favorite stars are not suitable for superhero movies because they are mostly pretty boys."

Whenever I see handsome Chinese men, I can’t help getting a bit angry.
My grandfather was easily better looking than almost all modern Chinese celebrities. Chiseled features, piercing eyes and dark, full eyebrows and a Chad jawline. Dude looked like he was cut out of marble.
My dad isn’t nearly as good looking as my grandfather, and I’m not nearly as good looking as my dad. We also lost 12 cm in height along the way.
I don't have anything against actor Simu Liu, but he is definitely not a very handsome actor.
I'll just pick a few Chinese male actors and you'll see the difference.
This type is what China considers handsome.
Asian American actors don't look as good as the people walking down the street in China.
Asian actors and actresses in Western movies look really ordinary.
American movies and TV shows have a very small market in China because they are full of black, white, and Latino people, and we Chinese don’t know these people at all.
Apart from video games, other forms of entertainment are difficult to popularize in other countries because the culture is completely different.
Plus if shang-chi was played by a really handsome Chinese actor, you have angry racist men foaming on their mouth when their women folks start swooning over them.
It happened in the 20s with this Japanese actor who was considered the sex icon in Hollywood until Hollywood replace him with Rudolph Valentino cause haven forbid a white woman falls for a non white man
Lol. White Americans don’t dare to star good looking Chinese in movies. They can’t afford to. Blacks have already taken their white women.
Why are we racialising the features of superstars? Simu is typical, average guy on the street looking. These actors from China are Chinese, and therefore have Chinese noses: just not typical. It is not “European”. It is like saying all white American women look like Margot Robbie, Lily Rose Depp, Tilda Swinton (none of which are American, but of European descent). These white “European actresses” are atypical, as are these actors from China are, to their respective markets. The white “european descent” typical american equivalent of Simu would be someone like….photo courtesy of Buzzfeed in 2018 What Average American women look like. Mic drop. Boom.

When I found out that the Chinese models appearing in the modeling industry in Europe and the United States were a little strange (brown skin + small eyes), someone reassured me that it was because of the different aesthetic culture. But I'm pretty sure now that they just wanted to highlight Asian features rather than actually think they're beautiful.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In any case, what matter should be the acting skills of the actor and not how good looking he is. Please don’t let acting be reduced into a beauty contest.

Chinese beauty standards emphasize: lighter skin tone, more angular chin, less broad nose but higher nasal bridge, double eyelids, and also sharp angular eyebrows. This applies to men and women.
I don’t get the controversy.
First of all Marvel has an miracle tendency of picking actors and actresses just before they peak. Everyone talks about Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. as A-list stars but they were virtually unknowns or cast-offs before they were casted as Marvel super heroes. Elizabeth Olsen was just simply “the other Olsen sister”. Wasn’t Chris Pratt the fat guy from Parks and Rec?
Meanwhile Marvel casted one of the most popular actor from the one of the most popular shows in Canada. An actor who plays the role of the heartthrob that all of the women in the show want to sleep with but for some reason other users will post photos of him like above and then complain about how disrespectful Marvel is for casting an ugly actor who will make American women squirm in disgust?
Maybe he has freckles or something.
Simu Liu is pretty handsome by Western standards. We know because he is constantly shirtless and all of the women in Kim’s Convenience are trying to sleep with him.
Meanwhile, if we’re going to talk about finding a gold vein, casting Awkwafina couldn’t come at a better moment for the MCU. Sure she isn’t conventionally beautiful but since the announcement of her casting in July 2019, she has become one of the marketable Asian American stars.
Yeah, Feige has an incredible knack for identifying future stars at a point where he can get them to sign contracts for not that much: I think Evans made like $300k for Captain America.
In what multiverse is that guy “ugly”?
Current East Asian beauty trends shun highly angular, square faces on both men and women; high cheekbones, strong jaw, (i.e. all the traits that make bank in high fashion in the west) etc. in favor of strong neoteny like small mouths, petite facial bones, pale childlike skin, non-prominent cheeks etc.

It’s not “current” the “gonzi” (aristocratic childe) look was a thing for at least a couple of centuries. Even in Chinese novels such as Dream of Red Mansion (written in 1755) the main male protagonist Jia BaoYu was described as a beauty with delicate feature and a face that seems almost powdered. And if you take a look at old Chinese films, any film that requires a romantic hero, the male protagonist is a pretty boy with delicate features. Some examples:
The reason is due to the superstimulus that the aristocratic gong zi were men who behaved gentle, civilized and well educated, as oppose to men who were violent barbarian brutes that appear overly masculine. The gonzis tend to have delicate almost feminine features because they were nobles who stayed indoors most of the time. In fact in Europe there was a similar movement (that’s where the term “gentlemen” came from) but in Asia the stimulus was larger
by Chinese celebrity standards he would be considered quite ugly. I’m a Chinese American and even when I saw that he was cast I was wincing like heck. And if I saw him in real life I wouldn’t really consider him “handsome” either. He’d just be maybe above average.

I was thinking at first that this was just some overblown story that is highlighting a few random idiots on Twitter. Especially after the “Gen Z wants to cancel Eminem’ nonsense. I’m actually surprised that this could be true as they went out and asked questions to people in Beijing.
It could still be cherry picked I guess, but I’m surprised there was a controversy in media that is actually a controversy rather than something heavily exaggerated.

I’ve watched most of Kim’s Convenience and, while I think the writing went a little downhill after the end of the 2nd season, I nonetheless appreciate most of the cast. I think Simu Liu is an excellent comedic actor with spot-on timing and a very believable on-screen persona. From Korean friends I’ve heard that they thought he did a reasonable job of portraying a Korean Canadian.
So, my daughter and son-in-law are Marvel fans. They took us to the Shang Chi movie. I already wanted to go, because three of the cast members are actors that I’ve liked for a long time (Leung Chiu Wai, Michelle Yeoh and Ben Kingsley), and because I’d heard that it portrayed subjects found in the 山海經 (I have a copy of this that my wife picked up last time we were in Shanghai in 2018).
I’ll be frank - Simu Liu may not be the handsomest guy in the world - but that really doesn’t matter, especially for this role. He was supposed to be this character that was a sort-of Chinese everyman, raised to be a killer by his mercenary father - and his acting chops showed as he attempted to work-through his past and came to grips with his future.
Let’s just say, he succeeded in this role and my family and I all were impressed. I will be watching for future stuff that he’s in - whether it’s in the MCU or not.
And even if I were gay, I still wouldn’t want to sleep with him.
I believe so, though this is perfectly acceptable. Chinese and American’s have different definition of beauty. I remember an example cited in previous years.
Ms Lucy Liu is possibly one of the most well-known Chinese American actresses in Hollywood. When I was younger, I remembered some Chinese audiences did similarly criticise her appearance, but some American audiences commented she has an exotic, fierce and confident look.
Personally, I do feel Lucy Liu has a very unique appearance and her roles were cast to emphasize her trait, which were undoubted very successful roles.
As for Liu Simu, I would agree he is not physically attractive from a Chinese point of view, but far from “ugly.” As some other commentators have said, I think he looks a little similar to Wu Jing. In fact, since he is cast for Shang-Chi, a martial art themed superhero, being too physically attractive mightrt of actually make him unrealistic.
What I am a little uncertain though, is that he is completely unknown to most of the Chinese cinema fan base. This may be a huge turn-off more so than his looks. But it's too early to doubt him, as there have been many unknowns who played their first role to critical acclaim, including the legendary performance of Christopher Reeve's Superman.
EDIT: Thanks for the upvotes and comments!
Some people have asked what sort of guys would be considered handsome in Chinese culture, so I decided to ask the missus. She gave one candidate for the 20–30, 30–40, 40–50 and 50–60 age division. They are…
David Yu
I think the problem is the talent pool is too shallow.
Cap and Thor are both handsome.
So out of a bunch of good looking actor, they could pick two.
The Asian pool is smaller.
I remember I saw a funny vid on Weibo. A fangirl literally left the theater in tears, saying “Thor is fat now! I can't even look at him! I wish Thanos actually killed him!” Her friend then started comforting her.
I’m Chinese.
I wouldn’t say Simu Liu is ugly. But he sure is not good looking to most Chinese netizens either.
However, the actor of Mandarin, Tony Leung Chiu Wei has been considered one of the most good looking people in China for years, maybe even decades.
One more thing, Chinese netizens like to call good looking girls “Goddesses”(女神), there’s a male version of it too “男神”. I can’t figure out an appropriate translation, but you’ll get it.
When Chinese netizens use the word “男神”, this Chinese American actor/director/producer is referred to very often.
His name is Daniel Wu 吳彥祖. Star of AMC’s Into the Badlands. He also played a few roles in Hollywood movies too, like Lu Ren in Tomb Raider 2018, Gul’dan in Warcraft. Considered one of the most handsome men by Chinese netizens.
Here’s another well known Chinese actor John Lone

He was voted one of the 50 Most Beautiful People of the Year by People Magazine in 1990.[1] He played Puyi in The Last Emperor, Joey Tai in Year of the Dragon, and Song Liling in M. Butterfly.
I think John Lone is a very good example of Chinese and American having a common(similar, at least) taste for the appearance of men. And I don’t think Marvel cast Simu Liu because they think he is a good looking man. Simu Liu just looks more stereotypical. They cast Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson as Caucasian leading characters(These two are beautiful AF, let’s be honest). But when it comes to a Chinese leading character, they pick a stereotypical one. Think about it.
However, as a Chinese, I will never go to the cinema or rent a DVD for Shang-Chi. And I’ve watched every MCU movie in the cinema since 2012, the year The Avengers was released. I have nothing against Simu Liu. It’s all about the Shang-Chi character and the stories. The stories about Shang-Chi are just insulting to us Chinese people and our ancestors.
BTW, when a native English speaker tries to pronounce “Shang-Chi”, it always sounds like 疝氣 in Chinese, which means hernia. The pronunciation of Shang-Chi(上氣) in Mandarin is more like “Shawn Chi”. And the meaning of Shang-Chi(上氣) in Chinese is “being angry” or “getting angry”, not “rising chi”.

I don’t think Simu Liu is “Ugly”, but I don’t think he fits the definition of “handsome” in America.
And I am absolutely 101% certain, without a doubt, willing-to-bet-my-house-on-it-AND-face-the-innumerable-demons-of-Hell that he doesn’t meet Chinese/East Asian male beauty standards.
This man fits Chinese male beauty standards:
Simu Liu doesn’t.
While Simu Liu’s lack of physical comeliness certainly won’t be an impediment to the acting side of things, I fear one thing:
That American / Western audiences who are unfamiliar with East Asian male beauty standards will take one look at him and go: “See. I knew all Chinese/Asian men were ugly.”
That, and anyone who appreciates Chinese / East Asian male beauty standards would be a little disappointed that they wouldn’t getting eye-candy in the film.
I am an eternal optimist with a pessimistic side.
And the above is my pessimistic side speaking.

I don't think he is ugly or handsome in either culture and looks tend not to be quite the same predictor for success with male actors unlike female actors. No, he is not stunningly handsome but he does have a great physique and has a rather charming, charismatic manner about him. He seems to have built up a fanbase of mainly non-asian ladies (and some men) who find him attractive.
I am continually confused as to why so many westerners find men such as Bradley Cooper, Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch so handsome when I find them to be very unattractive. They certainly don't match up to the attractiveness of Andy Lau, Chow Yun Fat or Aaron Kwok in their prime.
Ultimately I'm not sure why anyone in the west cares what China's citizens think about stars in certain films, a lot of Hollywood blockbusters bomb in China anyway because it's a completely different culture with different tastes. The citizens of China certainly do not tend to care if Chinese films are big in the west or not.
With this film I'm far more worried about the possible dent in the reputation of Tony Leung for agreeing to take on the historically offensive role of the Mandarin. I only hope he does have the power to change the character in the film.
