So, I am not Australian but I’ve been living here for the past 18 months. I’ve noticed in my short time being here that teens really don’t care about anything or the consequences of what they’re doing. Am I the only one thinking that ?

I’ve never been disrespected by kids before in any country, and didn’t think much of it the first few times it happened here, but after adding up everything it’s happening a LOT.

One time just driving in the city, couples kids looking 12~14 threw plastic cups full of whatever they were drinking on my windshield, while flipping fingers, an other time riding my bike, was waiting at a red light and as soon as it turned green got spat on and cursed at while the car drove away (probably a bit older this time but passengers looked 16 max).

That’s just a few examples but so many times I’ve had encounters like that, and actually witnessed much more.

What’s the reason for that ?

It's (mainly) because of popular culture. I spend a lot of time talking to and being around (Australian) teenagers and I quite knowledgeable about these things if I do say so myself. It's considered cool to drink, smoke, take drugs and behave really, really, badly. They will make racists and homophobic jokes, swear, and, as you said, use really offensive gestures. I wish we lived in a world where the American 'Gangster' attitude was considered uncool and the nice, kind and happy approach to life was embraced. The world would be a much better place. As the musical genius that is The Beatles said, 'All you need is love.'

Australia has racism. The culture has gotten more racist since we started locking up refugees on Nauru and Manus etc because the only rhetoric that supports it is racist.

Whoever said it was a teenage problem was using a cop out and trying to get you to stop thinking about it. Whether they realised this or not.

It's not a teenage problem, it's a societal problem.

Whats wrong is the government and the system. Gambling, Alcohol and Drugs rip family's apart and the government is addicted to the taxes these things generate. These teenagers your referring to I guarantee are from broken family's or there friends are. Look at the Family law courts of Australia the system is broken, the lawyer's take advantage of these peoples broken lives, and get rich by ridiculously charging massive amounts of money to represent the already struggling family's. Which in result makes things worse for the already financially struggling family's as a result there children suffer. They get pushed out into the poorer suburbs with poorer funded schools with poorer funded inferstructor with less job opportunities plus many more disadvantages, which just continues the cycle, while the solicitors, judges, psychologists, doctors and who ever else involved in these cases going through the broken court system there family's get stronger financially giving them a better chance in life living in the better subuarbs with better infrastructure with better job opportunities with there children getting a private school education. All this paid for by these all ready struggling family's.

And that is just the start of the many problems that we have with this country and the government is the main cause to our social problems.

Adults have complained about the youth of today not having any respect since the beginning of time.

These kids have just come out of 3 years of disrupted schooling, lockdown, not being able to go outside, see their friends or do normal kid stuff. They wake up every day to news about how the climate is collapsing and there is no future for them. They've grown up with unlimited access porn and to the worst parts of youtube. I say they're probably doing the best they can.

Experts have been left stunned by the level of disturbing content including gory material and hate speech teens are consuming online.

Almost two-thirds of the 1000 15 to 17-year-olds interviewed for a new Unicef survey say they have watched violent content online, with many taking action on social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok by blocking or reporting the material.

Two in five say they have viewed self-harm content and more than 70 per cent of teens say they have come across hate speech targeting certain groups online, with the numbers alarming experts.

“We found the level of exposure to harmful content quite shocking,” John Livingstone, head of digital policy at Unicef Australia, said.

Schoolyard fights and dangerous stunts are some of the things young people are scrolling past, and parents say they feel helpless to stop it.

Livingston said, “in many ways, Australia is at the very forefront of protecting children online” but more needs to be done to keep youths safe from “dangerous and harmful” content.

“We know that children’s online safety continues to be at risk from bullying, harmful content, and contact from strangers,” he said.

“So, we need to put tools in the hands of more children and parents to help with this, along with stronger laws and changes to online platforms to provide more safety.

“Additionally, the unprecedented collection of children’s data also places them at risk of hacking and manipulation.

“The government’s recent commitment to develop a Children’s Online Privacy Code is a step in the right direction. We need new laws which better protect children’s data, and to raise awareness about privacy concerns for children.”

But Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, announced in January it would hide more sensitive content amid increasing pressure internationally from regulators.

“While we allow people to share content discussing their own struggles with suicide, self-harm and eating disorders, our policy is not to recommend this content and we have been focused on ways to make it harder to find,” the company said in a blog post.

“Now, when people search for terms related to suicide, self-harm and eating disorders, we’ll start hiding these related results and will direct them to expert resources for help.

“We already hide results for suicide and self-harm search terms that inherently break our rules and we’re extending this protection to include more terms.”

While calls for change grow louder, some industry experts say stricter online protections will only go so far.

They say more responsibility should fall on parents to limit the amount of time young kids spend on digital devices.

The issue of youth crime in Australia has garnered widespread attention in society. During school holidays, many teenagers engage in disruptive behavior in streets and alleys, involving activities like joyriding and assaulting drivers. These actions reflect the complexity of social problems.

The reasons behind youth crime are diverse. Firstly, families with poor economic conditions often struggle to meet their children's basic needs, forcing them to resort to illegal means to sustain themselves. Additionally, family issues such as increasing divorce rates and conflicts exacerbate psychological problems among teenagers. Mental health issues also play a significant role in driving youth crime, as some teenagers turn to alcohol and drugs to cope with family hardships, further fueling their criminal behavior.

The societal attitude towards youth crime is another influential factor. Inadequate parental guidance and supervision contribute to the escalation of juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, involvement in local gangs complicates the issue of crime.

The government faces challenges in addressing youth crime. Despite the existence of specialized juvenile justice departments, lenient punishments, such as community service, for offenders under 21 years old may not effectively deter criminal behavior. Moreover, there are concerns about mistreatment of inmates within youth detention centers, highlighting the need for societal attention and improvement.
