What's wrong with some teenagers in Australia?

So, I am not Australian but I’ve been living here for the past 18 months. I’ve noticed in my short time being here that teens really don’t care about anything or the consequences of what they’re doing. Am I the only one thinking that ?

I’ve never been disrespected by kids before in any country, and didn’t think much of it the first few times it happened here, but after adding up everything it’s happening a LOT.

One time just driving in the city, couples kids looking 12~14 threw plastic cups full of whatever they were drinking on my windshield, while flipping fingers, an other time riding my bike, was waiting at a red light and as soon as it turned green got spat on and cursed at while the car drove away (probably a bit older this time but passengers looked 16 max).

That’s just a few examples but so many times I’ve had encounters like that, and actually witnessed much more.

It's (mainly) because of popular culture. I spend a lot of time talking to and being around (Australian) teenagers and I quite knowledgeable about these things if I do say so myself. It's considered cool to drink, smoke, take drugs and behave really, really, badly. They will make racists and homophobic jokes, swear, and, as you said, use really offensive gestures. I wish we lived in a world where the American 'Gangster' attitude was considered uncool and the nice, kind and happy approach to life was embraced. The world would be a much better place. As the musical genius that is The Beatles said, 'All you need is love.'

Australia has racism. The culture has gotten more racist since we started locking up refugees on Nauru and Manus etc because the only rhetoric that supports it is racist.

Whoever said it was a teenage problem was using a cop out and trying to get you to stop thinking about it. Whether they realised this or not.

Whats wrong is the government and the system. Gambling, Alcohol and Drugs rip family's apart and the government is addicted to the taxes these things generate. These teenagers your referring to I guarantee are from broken family's or there friends are. Look at the Family law courts of Australia the system is broken, the lawyer's take advantage of these peoples broken lives, and get rich by ridiculously charging massive amounts of money to represent the already struggling family's. Which in result makes things worse for the already financially struggling family's as a result there children suffer. They get pushed out into the poorer suburbs with poorer funded schools with poorer funded inferstructor with less job opportunities plus many more disadvantages, which just continues the cycle, while the solicitors, judges, psychologists, doctors and who ever else involved in these cases going through the broken court system there family's get stronger financially giving them a better chance in life living in the better subuarbs with better infrastructure with better job opportunities with there children getting a private school education. All this paid for by these all ready struggling family's.

These kids have just come out of 3 years of disrupted schooling, lockdown, not being able to go outside, see their friends or do normal kid stuff. They wake up every day to news about how the climate is collapsing and there is no future for them. They've grown up with unlimited access porn and to the worst parts of youtube. I say they're probably doing the best they can.

The reasons behind youth crime are diverse. Firstly, families with poor economic conditions often struggle to meet their children's basic needs, forcing them to resort to illegal means to sustain themselves. Additionally, family issues such as increasing divorce rates and conflicts exacerbate psychological problems among teenagers. Mental health issues also play a significant role in driving youth crime, as some teenagers turn to alcohol and drugs to cope with family hardships, further fueling their criminal behavior.

The societal attitude towards youth crime is another influential factor. Inadequate parental guidance and supervision contribute to the escalation of juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, involvement in local gangs complicates the issue of crime.

The government faces challenges in addressing youth crime. Despite the existence of specialized juvenile justice departments, lenient punishments, such as community service, for offenders under 21 years old may not effectively deter criminal behavior. Moreover, there are concerns about mistreatment of inmates within youth detention centers, highlighting the need for societal attention and improvement.
